In a groundbreaking ceremony, the Heforshe Network inaugurated over 50 men and boys as gender champions, marking a significant milestone in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in Plateau State.
The event, held at Golden Bites Hotel and Suites in Rayfield, Jos, was part of the 16-days of activism against GBV. It brought together men and youths from various communities, strategic partners, and stakeholders, including the National Human Rights Commission, Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs, CLEEN Foundation, and the Office of the State Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The theme of the event, “16-days of Activism: Community Unite to End Violence Against Women And Girls (VAWG) through Preventive Pathways Enhancing Positive Masculinity in Addressing VAWG,” emphasized the critical role of men and boys in preventing GBV.
The highlight of the event featured two thought-provoking paper presentations. Gyang Dudu Dalyop facilitated a session on “The Importance of Heforshe in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence,” while Stanley Smiles delivered a compelling presentation on “Preventive Pathways Enhancing Positive Masculinity in Addressing VAWG.”
The inauguration of participants into the Heforshe Network marked a pivotal moment in the event. Over 50 men and boys pledged to become gender champions, committing to promote positive masculinity and work towards ending GBV in their communities.
Strategic partners, including UN-Women WPS Structures, The Media Network, Women Mediators, Traditional and Religious Leaders, and Civil Society Representatives, delivered goodwill messages, reaffirming their support for the Heforshe Network’s mission.
The event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing GBV and promoting gender equality. By engaging men and boys as allies, the Heforshe Network aims to create a society where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination.
As the 16-days of activism come to a close, the Heforshe Network’s inauguration of male champions serves as a beacon of hope for a brighter, more equitable future.
