Tragedy struck once again in Plateau State as gunmen attacked Wereng Camp in Riyom Local Government Area, killing no fewer than eight people and injuring several others late Wednesday night.
The attackers, who reportedly stormed the community in large numbers, began shooting indiscriminately, targeting residents as they fled for safety. Eyewitnesses said most of the victims were children and the elderly.
Several homes were set ablaze, and large quantities of foodstuffs were looted during the assault. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the attack as “unprovoked and brutal,” expressing frustration over the repeated violence in the area.
Efforts to get confirmation from security agencies were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
This latest attack adds to a series of violent incidents in Plateau’s rural areas, particularly in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, and Riyom LGAs, which have seen repeated invasions by armed groups in recent months.
In response to the escalating violence, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, has urged the Federal Government to intervene and help curb the attacks on citizens.
To enhance security, the governor recently imposed restrictions on motorcycle use between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. across the state and banned night grazing. In a recent state broadcast, he explained that these measures aim to restore calm and improve vigilance in vulnerable communities.
