Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, on Wednesday, commissioned the new Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) Ultra-Modern Market in Bukuru, aimed at easing the challenges faced by traders and market women. He was accompanied by his deputy, Her Excellency Ngo Josephine Piyo.

The facility, built under the supervision of the JMDB, comprises 165 shops, including 16 warehouses, 133 lock-up shops, 15 small shops, 116 stalls, and open spaces for hawkers, with a capacity for over 2,000 traders. A motor park and parking lot have also been provided to ensure smooth access and mobility.

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Mutfwang described the market as a “lifeline” designed to restore dignity and stability to traders, many of whom had been displaced and left without spaces to conduct business.

“This market is not just a trading hub; it is a lifeline for our traders, particularly women, who have endured harsh conditions for years. In line with our people-centered approach, I have directed that displaced women be given priority in shop allocations,” he said.

The governor added that the initiative aligns with his administration’s vision under the Greater Jos Master Plan to build modern, functional cities with world-class facilities that promote commerce and investment. He further announced plans to reconstruct Kugiya Market, the Jos Main Market, Maraban Jama’a Market, and other neighborhood markets across the state.

Governor Mutfwang commended JMDB’s General Manager, Arc. Hart Bankat, for his leadership and commitment in delivering the project, described the board’s revival under his watch as proof that “with the right leadership, every institution can function.”

In his remarks, Arc. Bankat expressed gratitude to the governor for his support and to CTM for donating land for the project. He disclosed that construction commenced in July 2024 and has been completed within record time. He also revealed that a second phase of the project is underway, with more land already secured for expansion.

“This clean and well-organized environment will boost economic activities and transform Bukuru into a modern trading hub. With phase two already in progress, we are confident this project will redefine urban development in Plateau State,” he said.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Daniel Gapyil Naanlong, Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Sylvanus Dongtoe, Managing Director of Spade Investment Ltd, Gari Kim Wayas, and traders’ representative, Yakubu Muhammad. They all highlighted the importance of the project in empowering women and strengthening Plateau’s economy.

Governor Mutfwang urged traders and community members to take ownership of the facility, emphasizing the need for proper maintenance and collective responsibility to ensure its sustainability.

“Our goal is to leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of Plateau people. Together, we can build a prosperous and resilient economy for today and for generations to come,” he said.
