Governor Caleb Mutfwang has announced that the Plateau State Government will soon begin the construction of mass housing projects aimed at reducing the high cost of rent in the state.

Speaking to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, Mutfwang expressed concern over the current rental rates, describing the situation as “worrying” for many residents.

He noted that many people, especially civil servants and low-income earners, struggle to find affordable housing in the state capital and other urban areas.

According to the governor, the initiative is part of a larger strategy by his administration to address the housing deficit and reduce pressure on existing accommodations.

“We are currently accelerating our investments in the housing sector; this is one area we are so concerned about,” Mutfwang said.

He revealed that the government is already clearing sites to pave the way for the mass housing scheme, adding that construction would begin in a few months.

The governor disclosed that talks are ongoing with the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and other private investors to partner with the state on the housing development.

“We are in talks with the Federal Housing Authority and other investors to key into this initiative,” he noted.

Mutfwang also confirmed that the state government has successfully completed payments for land to build houses specifically for civil servants in Plateau.

“I’m glad that we were able to complete the payment for land on behalf of our workers for the construction of houses for civil servants in the state,” he said.

While acknowledging that the government cannot directly control how much landlords charge for rent, Mutfwang believes increased housing supply will help discourage exploitation.

He emphasized that the mass housing project will not only ease the housing burden but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth across Plateau State.
