In response to the recent nationwide protests, the Plateau State Police Command announced the arrest of 51 suspects in Jos for defying government directives and attempting to vandalize private properties.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbemiga Emmanuel Adesina, praised the residents of Plateau State, particularly the youths, for adhering to the state-imposed curfew and cooperating with the police and other security agencies. However, he expressed disappointment over the actions of some youths who attacked armed policemen at Yen Tire market and other locations in Jos North LGA.
DSP Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer, released the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, Jos, on August 7, 2024.
“The curfew was imposed in the best interest of all Plateau residents,” said CP Adesina, emphasizing the importance of compliance. To ensure adherence to the curfew, the Commissioner, along with heads of other security agencies, conducted an on-the-spot assessment and surveillance patrols across the state capital.
During these operations, 26 suspects were arrested for violating the curfew and attempting to loot shops. On August 7, 2024, an additional 25 suspects were apprehended by the STF operatives for similar offenses and handed over to the Plateau State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The suspects have since been charged to court.
CP Adesina also issued a stern warning against the display of foreign flags, labeling it a treasonable act that will be met with arrest and prosecution. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Plateau State Police Command to safeguard lives and properties, and to prevent any acts that could disrupt the fragile peace in the region.
