The Department of State Services (DSS) has moved to discipline its officers who arrested and detained two female journalists from Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, during the funeral service of the late mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, in Plateau State.
The journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang, were detained on Saturday, October 4, 2025, after covering the funeral held at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) Headquarters Church in Jos.
Their arrest reportedly followed a video posted on Jay FM’s social media handles showing a disagreement between some clerics and security operatives who allegedly prevented the clergy from entering the church.
The video quickly went viral, sparking public outrage after the radio station announced that its staff were missing. Following the outcry and pressure from media groups, the journalists were later released.
Fresh reports on Monday revealed that the DSS leadership has begun internal disciplinary actions against the officers involved in the arrest.
It was gathered that the Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi, ordered that the erring personnel be sanctioned for their “overzealous and unprofessional conduct.”
A source within the agency, who confirmed the move on condition of anonymity, said the DSS had admitted that the arrest was a mistake and has since apologized to Jay FM management.
“The DG has directed that those involved face disciplinary action to serve as a deterrent to others. The officers have been identified, and measures are already being implemented,” the source said.
The disciplinary action, according to insiders, underscores the DSS Director-General’s resolve to uphold professionalism and prevent future violations of journalists’ rights.
Media observers have commended the development, urging the DSS to ensure transparency and respect for press freedom in all its operations.
The incident had earlier drawn strong condemnation from Jay FM and the public, with calls for accountability and an end to harassment of media professionals.
