The Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State, has uncovered a syndicate involved in the forgery and issuance of fake academic results and certificates, leading to the imprisonment of two men.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Jere Ndazhaga, disclosed this at a press conference in Jos on Monday, stating that the convicts, Friday Tunkyes and Harvey Obed Ringsum, were each sentenced to one and a half years’ imprisonment.
According to Ndazhaga, the case came to light after a suspicious certificate was presented at the Examinations and Records Section of the university by an individual who complained that the result was not uploaded on the JAMB portal.
He said the vigilance of staff on duty led to the discovery of inconsistencies, prompting an internal investigation that resulted in the recovery of several forged certificates and official emboss stamps.
The matter was subsequently reported to the University Security Unit, the Divisional Police Office in Pankshin, and the State Intelligence Department, following credible intelligence that criminal elements were producing fake academic documents in the name of the institution.
Further undercover operations led to the arrest of Friday Tunkyes of Mikang Local Government Area and Harvey Obed Ringsum of Mangu Local Government Area, who were later convicted and sentenced by the court.
