Dr. Julie Sanda, the Director-General of the Plateau Peacebuilding Agency (PPBA), has reiterated the agency’s commitment to encouraging community resilience as a core strategy in mitigating conflicts across Plateau State.
In a recent press briefing, Dr. Sanda emphasized that the agency continues to prioritize sustainable peace through engaging local communities, promoting dialogue, and enhancing trust among residents.
Dr. Sanda noted that the agency’s approach is grounded in empowering communities to take ownership of peacebuilding processes. “Building community resilience remains a priority for the Plateau Peacebuilding Agency. We are committed to ensuring that every individual and group feels responsible for the peace and stability of our state,” she said.
She further explained that the PPBA has introduced several initiatives aimed at strengthening inter-communal relationships and encouraging grassroots participation in conflict resolution. These initiatives include workshops, peace dialogues, and training programs designed to equip local leaders and community members with the necessary skills to manage disputes before they escalate into violence.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Dr. Sanda called on relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders, to continue supporting the agency’s efforts. “We cannot do this alone. For peace to be sustainable, we need the active involvement of everyone in the Plateau community,” she stated.
The Plateau Peacebuilding Agency has been at the forefront of peace initiatives in the state, particularly in areas that have experienced recurring tensions.
According to Dr. Sanda, the agency remains resolute in its mission to create lasting peace through resilience-building programs that focus on healing past wounds and preventing future conflicts.
As part of Plateau State’s commitment to peacebuilding, the month of September is recognized as the Month of Peace by the agency. The agency emphasizes the significance of media engagement in promoting this year’s theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.”
This approach aligns with the agency’s mandate of fostering harmony among the state’s diverse ethnic and religious groups. By collaborating with the media and various stakeholders, the PPBA seeks to drive cultural advocacy and reshape societal narratives to prioritize peaceful coexistence. These efforts are especially relevant in a region that has historically faced violent conflicts, necessitating a proactive, community-based approach to peacebuilding.
The Director of Administration, Mr. Elkanah Izam, reflected on the agency’s journey, discussing its past achievements, current position, and future aspirations. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming “Month of Peace” initiative, stressing the agency’s commitment to partnering with key stakeholders to ensure its success and to promote lasting peace in Plateau State.
