Following recent attacks on miners on sites in the state, the Executive Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Amalau Samuel Amalau, has ordered the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the council area.
The decision affects both legal and illegal mining operations, particularly in Tenti and Mandar districts, where several youths were reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias.
The directive was announced in a statement personally signed by the chairman on Sunday, February 1, 2026, as part of urgent measures to address the worsening security situation in the area.
Amalau explained that the suspension became necessary after consultations with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders, stressing that the safety of lives and property remains a top priority.
He noted that continued mining activities could further expose residents and miners to attacks and deepen the fragile security conditions in the affected communities.
In addition to the mining shutdown, the chairman imposed a daily curfew from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in Tenti and Mandar districts and their surrounding areas.
According to him, the curfew is aimed at strengthening security surveillance and enabling security operatives to effectively carry out their duties.
Amalau urged residents, miners, business operators, and visitors to comply strictly with the directives, appealing for calm and cooperation as efforts continue to restore peace and normalcy in Bokkos Local Government Area.
