Academic activities have been brought to a standstill at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) and Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, following the full compliance of lecturers with the two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The strike, which began on Monday, was declared by ASUU’s national leadership after the Federal Government failed to meet the union’s demands, which include improved funding of public universities, better working conditions, and payment of earned academic allowances.
A visit to the UNIJOS Bauchi Road campus on Monday afternoon showed deserted lecture halls as lecturers stayed away from classes, leaving students stranded.
Speaking to journalists in Jos, the ASUU branch chairman at UNIJOS, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, confirmed that members were “complying one hundred percent” with the national directive.
“We are not afraid of the government’s ‘no work, no pay’ threat. We will continue to comply until our demands are met,” he stated.
Prof. Molwus emphasized the union’s commitment to ensuring improved welfare for lecturers and adequate funding for universities across the country.
Similarly, the ASUU branch chairman at PLASU, Dr. Monday Hassan, said the university’s lecturers have also joined the strike.
“The warning strike will continue for two weeks unless the Federal Government meets our demands,” he said.
The ongoing industrial action has effectively shut down academic activities in both institutions, raising concerns among students over the disruption of the academic calendar.
