Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, the wife of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, visited the Nigeria Army’s Officers Wives (NAOWA) Model Nursery and Primary School in Rukuba, Jos, as part of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2024.

Addressing an assembly of staff, pupils, and guests, Mrs. Lagbaja expressed her delight at returning to Maxwell Khobe Cantonment. Reflecting on her previous visit to the 3 Division Nigerian Army area in November, she highlighted the inauguration of key projects, including the Maria Abiodun Lagbaja Multipurpose Hall and a remodeled crèche and administrative block.

In her speech, Mrs. Lagbaja emphasized the pivotal role of education in societal development. “Education is the cornerstone of development worldwide,” she stated, noting her administration’s focus on improving NAOWA educational institutions, facilities, and assets. She praised the dedication of the school’s staff, observing that their commitment was evident in the well-maintained facilities and learning environment.

A significant highlight of the visit was Mrs. Lagbaja’s generous donation of 1 million naira to Mrs. Christiana Jonah, the longest-serving staff member at NAOWA Model Nursery and Primary School. Mrs. Christian Jonah, who has dedicated 22 years to the school, was commended for her unwavering service and significant contributions to its development. This gesture was met with applause and heartfelt appreciation from those present.

During the visit, Mrs. Lagbaja also inaugurated new projects, aligning with NAOWA’s activities for NADCEL 2024. “Today we have commissioned projects in line with NAOWA’s activities to commemorate this NADCEL 2024,” she noted. “The Nigerian Army celebration is a significant event which happens every year. In commemoration of the Nigerian Army Day celebration of 2024 NADCEL, we’re celebrating the Army at 161 years. We wish the Nigerian Army more wisdom and strength and Nigeria a more peaceful and secure country.”

Mrs. Lagbaja also praised the ongoing support from the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. “We appreciate the First Lady for her huge support, especially to the widows of our fallen heroes, women, and children,” she said. “Through the Renew Hope Initiative, she has provided scholarships and support, touching the lives of widows, retired military wives, youths, and children. We are grateful for her contributions.”

Earlier in the day, Mrs. Lagbaja commissioned the Three Division NAOWA EMS Exam and Doctor’s Station, initiated by Mrs. Fibishola Abubakar, Chairperson of the NAOWA Three Division chapter. Mrs. Lagbaja congratulated Mrs. Abubakar and her team for their alignment with her vision for NAOWA’s progress.

Mrs. Bilkisu Ibrahim, a notable NAOWA community member, welcomed Mrs. Lagbaja and recounted the school’s journey since its establishment in 2001. She highlighted the school’s growth from its nursery beginnings to its current enrollment of 614 learners and a dedicated staff of 71.

Mrs. Ibrahim outlined significant milestones, such as the construction of additional classrooms, a library, and a computer laboratory, while also noting ongoing challenges like the need for more computers and renovations to certain school sections.

Mrs. Lagbaja assured continued support for the school and NAOWA’s broader educational goals. She reiterated her commitment to enhancing educational facilities and supporting military families, including conducting humanitarian and medical outreaches as part of this year’s NADCEL activities.

The visit underscored the importance of education within the Nigerian Army community and highlighted Mrs. Lagbaja’s ongoing dedication to supporting and advancing NAOWA’s educational initiatives.
