The Senate condemned the heinous murder of a serving Corps member, Chalya Silas, in Kaduna State on Wednesday.
The Senate, in a motion proposed by Senator Napoleon Bali (Plateau South), observed with sadness the brutal murder of the 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps member on October 18, 2023.
Silas, the widowed mother’s sole kid, was stabbed by hoodlums on October 18, 2023, during an early morning exercise in Kaduna, where she was serving a one-year statutory term.
The motion further stated that Chalya was an eager NYSC member from Plateau State’s Langtang-North Local Government Area who actively contributed to community development projects during her assignment in Kaduna state.
According to the Senate, her untimely death at the age of 24 highlights our nation’s security challenges and serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved security measures to protect the lives and aspirations of all citizens, including vulnerable individuals such as NYSC members, whose safety has recently been threatened by various security challenges.”
The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over plenary, challenged security services with strengthening the security system to prevent such incidents from occurring.
“The gruesome murder of a 24-year-old girl; we must not allow this kind of murder to continue in this country,” he stated.
“It is therefore important that all our security agencies should be playing the roles they need to do to prevent this kind of murder from occurring on our land in the future.”
