Five months after being detained, Abdurasheed Bawa, the immediate previous chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was freed.
Reporters learned that the former czar for fighting corruption was freed on Wednesday evening.
Recall that on June 14, 2023, Bawa was taken into custody by the Department of State Service (DSS) only hours after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from his position as Chairman of the EFCC due to allegations of abusing his position.
The secret police haven’t officially preferred any charges against him or disclosed the nature of his specific offense since his arrest and incarceration.
In the meantime, Olanipekun Olukoyede was named the EFCC Chairman by Tinubu on October 12.
On October 18, 2023, the Senate ratified Olukoyede’s nomination.
