Member representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, has called for tougher measures against bandits, insisting that Nigeria must adopt a more decisive approach to address the country’s worsening security challenges.
Gagdi made the call during a live radio programme, “Viewpoint with Samson Omale,” on Rhythm FM, Jos while monitored by Clusterchannel Blog, where he also expressed support for the establishment of state police.
The federal lawmaker said the country’s security situation requires bold decisions, noting that recent legal developments have strengthened his belief that state policing could complement existing security structures in tackling crime.
Speaking on banditry, Gagdi maintained that those involved in violent attacks against innocent citizens should be dealt with firmly to restore public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
“I don’t believe in taking bandits to court or rehabilitating them. They should be neutralised at the point of contact. I know the government is concerned about human rights, but what about the human rights of innocent Nigerians who are being killed?” he said.
According to him, the persistent killings and destruction of communities demand extraordinary measures, stressing that protecting law-abiding citizens should remain the primary responsibility of government.
Gagdi argued that security agencies must be adequately empowered to confront criminal elements, while insisting that the safety of innocent lives should take precedence over every other consideration.
“The first responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. We must demonstrate the political will to confront those who have chosen violence against innocent citizens,” he stated.
The lawmaker also reaffirmed his support for state police, saying the current realities of insecurity require stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments to improve intelligence gathering and rapid response to emerging threats.
“My position has changed because the legal framework has evolved. If properly structured with the necessary safeguards, state police can strengthen our security system and improve the protection of lives and property,” Gagdi added.
He urged Nigerians to support every lawful initiative aimed at restoring peace across the country, expressing optimism that sustained reforms and stronger security policies would help curb criminal activities and guarantee lasting stability.
