Nigerian rapper Jude ‘MI’ Abaga has shared a memorable experience from the 2008 Headies Awards, revealing that he was once pushed aside on the red carpet to make way for Nollywood superstar Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde.

Speaking on Vbyz TV Cartel, the 44-year-old rapper said he arrived at the event with his manager after months of hard work, but very few people knew who he was at the time. Even though he was nominated for ‘Best Rap Single’, staff at the venue didn’t recognise him.

MI recalled that just before the ceremony began, he and his manager were repeatedly moved from place to place as photographers focused entirely on Omotola. Security officials and red-carpet handlers kept clearing them out of the way while the actress posed for pictures.

He described the moment as a clear reminder of how fame works, saying he watched Omotola enjoy the full spotlight while he struggled to get any attention. But everything changed that same night.

According to MI, his fortunes shifted when he was announced as the winner of the ‘Best Rap Single’ category. Holding that gold plaque from Ayo Animashaun marked the beginning of his breakthrough.

He said the award instantly changed public perception, ushering him into mainstream recognition. After that, he delivered hit releases such as Safe, Talk About It, and Incredible Music, firmly establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s biggest rap talents.
