A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, has warned that bandits are now threatening to abduct members of the National Assembly.
Wase made the revelation on Wednesday, November 26, during the resumed debate on national security in the House of Representatives.
He said the growing boldness of criminal groups across the country had reached an alarming level, putting even federal lawmakers at risk.
The lawmaker urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently review the directive ordering the withdrawal of police personnel attached to Very Important Personalities.
President Tinubu had, on Sunday, November 23, issued the directive during a security meeting in Abuja attended by Service Chiefs and the Director-General of the DSS.
Following the directive, the Special Protection Unit of the Nigeria Police Force instructed all officers attached to VIPs across the country to return to their bases.
Under the new security arrangement, VIPs requiring protection will no longer rely on police officers but must request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The Presidency explained that this restructuring is meant to strengthen police visibility in communities, especially in remote and vulnerable areas.
Government officials say the move will help address the challenge of understaffed police stations and improve the safety of citizens across the country.
Wase, however, insisted that while the intention may be noble, the present security realities require caution to avoid exposing lawmakers and other targets to greater danger.
