Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, former Deputy Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, has moved to strengthen Nigeria’s animal health sector through education.

On the floor of the House, Wase presented a Bill seeking the establishment of the Federal University for Animal Health and Production Technology in Vom, Plateau State.

The proposed university will focus on providing academic and professional training in veterinary medicine, animal health, and production technology.

According to Wase, the Bill outlines a comprehensive framework for the institution’s management, operations, and administration.

His motion for the Bill to be read a second time was quickly supported by Hon. Idem Unyime, signaling strong legislative backing.

The Bill has now scaled second reading and proceeds to the next stage for further legislative scrutiny.

If passed, the university will serve as a vital hub for research, innovation, and manpower development in the livestock and veterinary sectors.

Experts say the choice of Vom is strategic, as the area already houses the National Veterinary Research Institute, offering room for collaboration and shared resources.

The move has been welcomed by education and agriculture stakeholders, who see it as a step toward addressing gaps in animal health education.

Wase’s latest effort highlights his continued commitment to initiatives that empower youth, boost food security, and support national development.
