The Federal Government’s recent warning about the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (bird flu) in Kano has been followed by confirmed cases in Plateau and Katsina States, raising concerns among poultry farmers.
In Plateau, the outbreak was recorded on January 23, 2025, at a farm in Farin Gada, Jos North LGA, where over 3,000 birds were affected. Plateau State Director and Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Shase’et Sipak Dawat, revealed in a statement that, unfortunately, the affected birds had already been sold before veterinary officials could intervene with depopulation, decontamination, and disinfection.
“In view of this sad development, poultry farmers are advised to be vigilant and enhance hygiene standards on their farms while maintaining strict biosecurity,” Dr Dawat stated.
Similarly, in Katsina, the Zonal Veterinary Officer of Malumfashi, Dr. Yau Ishaku, confirmed an earlier outbreak on January 21, 2025. He urged poultry farmers in Malumfashi, Kafur, and Kankara LGAs to enforce stringent biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the disease, which poses both economic and health risks.
Farmers have been advised to restrict access to poultry farms, disinfect feeders and drinkers daily, and remain vigilant for any signs of the disease. Authorities are calling for swift action to contain the spread and safeguard the poultry industry.
