At a press briefing held at the Joseph Gomwalk State Secretariat in Jos, Plateau State, the Director of Administration for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Peter Wiebe, revealed significant achievements of the ministry since assuming office in 2023. Representing the Honorable Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Wiebe outlined key initiatives aimed at enhancing housing and urban infrastructure across the state.

Mr. Wiebe began by acknowledging the proactive efforts of the administration and the crucial role of the media in broadcasting government programs and policies. He emphasized the commitment of the government to transparency and progress, stating, “This indicates the proactive nature of the administration.”

Among the notable achievements highlighted was the acquisition of 80 federal housing units at Laminga. Mr. Wiebe explained that a negotiating team has been established to finalize these acquisitions, underscoring the government’s dedication to improving housing availability and affordability for residents.

Additionally, Mr. Wiebe detailed ongoing projects, including the construction of new offices to accommodate the staff of the newly merged Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the rehabilitation of roads within major slum areas. These initiatives aim to enhance living conditions, accessibility, and economic opportunities for residents.

The briefing also covered the Ministry’s partnership with the Federal Housing Authority to provide 200 hectares of land for housing development across selected local governments in the state. With the majority of the housing projects focused in the northern zone, the initiative seeks to address the housing needs of residents and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Mr. Wiebe highlighted the ongoing designation of 32 new urban centers across the state, emphasizing their role as drivers of economic activities. He noted the importance of these centers in creating employment opportunities and fostering local development.

In addition to housing and urban development projects, the briefing addressed improvements in firefighting capabilities. The government has ensured regular funding for the fire service, enabling them to maintain and upgrade equipment, purchase essential chemicals, and improve response times. Mr. Wiebe reassured the public, “You can call on the fire service now, and you are sure that they will be there.”

The Ministry’s efforts reflect a robust approach to infrastructure development and public safety, aiming to improve living conditions and stimulate economic growth across Plateau State. As Mr. Wiebe concluded, these achievements are a testament to the government’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of its citizens through strategic and impactful projects.

Mr. Wiebe further elaborated on the government’s commitment to alleviating congestion and enhancing revenue generation by establishing three truck terminals in strategic locations across the state. These terminals, located in Mr. Ali, Mararaban Jama’a, and Babadi, are designed to accommodate 5,000 trucks and create numerous job opportunities. This initiative aims to streamline transportation and logistics while boosting the state’s economy.

Moreover, the Ministry’s partnership with the Federal Housing Authority signifies a collaborative effort to address the housing deficit in Plateau State. By providing 200 hectares of land for housing development, the government aims to facilitate affordable housing solutions and improve the overall quality of life for residents. The selected local governments, including Shendam, Lantang, Pankshin, Mangu, Jos South, and Bassa, are poised to benefit from these initiatives, with an emphasis on equitable distribution across the state.

In urban development, the designation of 32 new urban centers underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth and decentralizing development initiatives. These centers are expected to serve as hubs for commerce, trade, and social activities, thereby stimulating local economies and enhancing livelihoods.

The Ministry’s proactive approach to infrastructure development and public safety extends to firefighting capabilities, with regular funding allocated to the fire service for equipment maintenance, upgrades, and training. This investment has led to improved response times and enhanced firefighting capabilities, ensuring the safety and security of residents across the state.

As the Ministry continues to implement its strategic initiatives, it remains dedicated to prioritizing the needs of the people and fostering sustainable development in Plateau State. Through collaborative partnerships, transparent governance, and strategic investments, the government aims to create a conducive environment for growth, prosperity, and overall well-being.
