The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced the results of the councillorship rerun elections held on Saturday, October 19, 2024. The rerun elections took place in nine wards across six Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state following the discovery of irregularities in the initial elections conducted on October 9.

PLASIEC Chairman, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, made the announcement at the commission’s headquarters in Jos, where certificates of return were also presented to the respective winners. The rerun saw the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) securing victories in Gindiri 2 and Kasuwan Ali wards in Mangu LGA, Kishika ward in Bassa LGA, and Jemkur and Turaki wards in Langtang South LGA. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Ampang East B ward in Kanke LGA and Luukwo ward in Quaan Pan LGA, while the Young People’s Party (YPP) emerged victorious in Fier and Mudkang Yelleng wards in Pankshin LGA.
In his remarks during the presentation of certificates of return, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak expressed gratitude for the support and cooperation PLASIEC had received from various stakeholders, including the media, security agencies, and civil society organizations. He emphasized the commission’s commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections in Plateau State.
Cishak highlighted some of the innovations introduced during the election process, including a voter verification system used for the first time at the local government level. He noted that although there were some challenges with the system’s implementation, it was successfully deployed in about 90% of polling units during the rerun. Cishak reassured the public that PLASIEC would continue to improve the system to ensure better results in future elections.
The chairman also praised the security personnel for their professionalism during the elections, stating that there were no major security incidents in Jos North LGA. He further commended the role of religious leaders, traditional rulers, and tertiary institutions in ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections.
Looking ahead, Cishak announced that PLASIEC had been invited to several national and international forums to share insights into their successful election process. Members of the commission are scheduled to attend a program in the United States in November to engage with organizations and other electoral bodies on democratic practices.
The rerun elections followed the peaceful local government elections held on October 9, 2024, in which the People’s Democratic Party won all 17 Local Government Chairmanship seats across Plateau State.
