Plateau State is taking deliberate steps to become one of Nigeria’s leading digital hubs. Deputy Governor Hon. Ngo Josephine Piyo announced this vision while representing Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

She spoke at the 13th National Council on Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in Jos. The council’s theme focused on accelerating inclusive digital transformation.

Piyo described the theme as timely, noting Nigeria is at a defining moment. Digital advancement is now essential for economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.

She highlighted critical gaps in broadband penetration and digital literacy. These challenges disproportionately affect young people, women, and persons with disabilities.

The state administration is expanding broadband infrastructure and promoting youth digital skills. It is also supporting startups through mentorship and access to essential tools.

In a keynote address, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani who was represented by Permanent Secretary Engr. Nadungu Gagare. He emphasized digital transformation’s crucial role for Nigeria’s future.

Young people are already driving technology solutions and digital commerce nationwide. However, gaps in connectivity, literacy, and innovation financing must be addressed.

Gagare stressed that collaboration across all sectors is key. Federal, state, and private partnerships are necessary to ensure digital progress reaches every citizen.

Earlier, Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, welcomed participants. He highlighted the honor of hosting the national council.

He stated that true innovation is measured by how technology drives progress while respecting culture. The state is committed to supporting the digital economy through policy and investment.

During the event, Anambra State emerged as the overall best in the Innovation Peer Review. Several other states, including Kaduna, Oyo, and Enugu, were also recognized for excellence.

Kano State Commissioner, Dr. Yusuf Kofar Mata, reported that 116 policy memos were presented. The majority were approved, showing a commitment to advancing development.

The discussions reinforced the need for unified action to bridge digital divides. All stakeholders were urged to pursue collaborative and sustainable solutions.

The Gbong Gwom Jos, HRM Da Jacob Gyang Buba, sent a goodwill message through his representative, The Gwom Rwei Gashish, Prof Nuhu G.G Dangata. He urged the inclusion of traditional institutions in future tech programs.

Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, thanked participants for choosing Plateau. She highlighted the state’s history of successfully hosting national events.

Hon. Yiljab Abraham, representing the Chief of Staff, Hon. Jeremiah Satmak, also delivered a goodwill message. He urged that digital transformation efforts must reach ordinary citizens in rural areas, especially in rural areas, with improved connectivity and security for inclusive development.

The event concluded with a shared focus on building an inclusive digital future. Ensuring progress reaches every community remains the paramount goal.
