The Plateau State House of Assembly has resolved to regulate the activities of unauthorized house agents across the state, following rising concerns about exploitation and illegal practices in the housing sector.
The motion was raised by Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, Member representing Pankshin North, during plenary. Lawmakers expressed worry over the unchecked operations of agents who impose exorbitant charges on residents in desperate search of accommodation.
Members agreed that the absence of regulation has given room for abuse, with tenants and landlords often falling victim to fraud, illegal fees, and unprofessional conduct. They resolved that a licensing system should be introduced to streamline operations and protect the public.
“The Assembly is determined to put an end to the exploitative tendencies of unauthorized house agents. We cannot continue to allow our citizens to suffer in the hands of individuals who take advantage of the housing needs of Plateau people,” Dewan stressed during debate.
The House also moved to repeal the outdated Rent Edict, describing it as obsolete and inadequate in addressing modern realities in the real estate sector. Lawmakers maintained that new legislation must reflect fairness, accountability, and affordability.
According to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel, “This resolution is a step towards protecting Plateau citizens from hardship and abuse. The Assembly will ensure that any new law passed will bring order to the housing sector and relief to tenants.”
The Committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development was directed to begin work on drafting the necessary framework for licensing and regulations to guide the activities of house agents across the state.
Speaker Daniel commended members for their robust contributions and assured that the Assembly remains committed to enacting laws that improve the living conditions of the people of Plateau State.
