Plateau State University Bokkos (PLASU) has commenced a groundbreaking partnership with Michigan State University (MSU), USA, aimed at advancing agricultural development through resource and knowledge exchange.

This partnership builds upon a nine-year collaboration initiated by Michigan State University with Plateau State, focusing on policy and capacity building for agricultural advancement. 

During a meeting with the management of Plateau State University on May 15, representatives of Michigan State University, emphasized the shared commitment to serving rural communities and improving agricultural productivity, mirroring the foundational goals of PLASU.

“Michigan State University’s longstanding dedication to agricultural development resonates deeply with PLASU’s mission to address the critical needs of the Plateau community,” stated Professor Shedrack Best, Acting Vice Chancellor of PLASU. 

“This partnership marks a significant step towards fulfilling our mandate and leveraging global expertise to empower our local agricultural sector.”

The collaboration encompasses initiatives funded by USAID and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, targeting research-focused activities to enhance food safety, affordability, and nutrition. 

Oyinkan Tasie, a member of the visiting team from Michigan State University, highlighted the focus on vegetables and tomatoes, gathering data from over 50 wholesale markets in Plateau State to address policy concerns specific to the region.

“We are thrilled to embark on this journey of collaboration with PLASU,” expressed Duncan Burton, representing Michigan State University. 

“Our shared commitment to addressing challenges such as insecurity and malnutrition underscores the importance of synergizing our efforts towards sustainable agricultural development.”

This partnership signifies a strategic alignment between academic institutions across borders, united in their pursuit of agricultural excellence and community empowerment. Through mutual cooperation and knowledge exchange, PLASU and Michigan State University aim to catalyze positive change and foster resilient agricultural systems for the benefit of local communities.
