In a proactive initiative to ensure the credibility of the upcoming local government elections on October 9, 2024, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) conducted a successful mock election across the state’s three senatorial zones. The exercise aimed to test the newly introduced Voter Verification System (VVS), designed to enhance the electoral process’s integrity by ensuring that only registered and eligible voters participate.

Polling units in six local government areas—Wase, Shendam, Pankshin, Mangu, Riyom, and Jos North—were selected for this trial. PLASIEC adhered to standard electoral procedures, deploying staff and materials to designated polling units, establishing voter queues, and utilizing the VVS for identity verification. This mock election allowed the commission to assess its preparedness ahead of the official election day.

The feedback from voters and electoral officials was overwhelmingly positive. Voters reported satisfaction with the smooth verification process facilitated by the VVS, which minimized delays and ensured accurate voter identification. The exercise also provided PLASIEC officials with valuable insights into potential challenges and areas for improvement before the actual election.

PLASIEC Chairman Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak emphasized the significance of the mock election in fostering public confidence. “We are committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election. This mock election has enabled us to test our systems and confirm that everything is in place for a smooth electoral process,” he stated.

The introduction of the VVS marks a key milestone in PLASIEC’s efforts to incorporate technology into the electoral process, aiming to prevent electoral fraud and streamline voting procedures.
