The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced its preparedness to host a global electoral management conference in Jos.
Hon. Plangji Cishak, PLASIEC Chairman, confirmed this during a courtesy visit by the Plateau Publishers Association (PPA), led by its Acting Chairman, Prince Daniel John Bok.
Hon. Cishak emphasized the importance of the event for Plateau State, describing it as an opportunity to showcase the state’s peace and tourism potentials.
He expressed confidence that the conference would reaffirm Plateau’s reputation as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.”
“Plateau has been battered for the wrong reasons, but it remains the most peaceful state,” Cishak stated, inviting delegates to see for themselves.
According to the chairman, the decision to host the event was made after consulting with the Plateau State Governor, who gave full approval.
“They wrote to us, and we consulted His Excellency, who saw it as an opportunity to promote the state,” Cishak explained.
A key feature of the conference will be a dedicated day for international delegates to visit Plateau’s tourism sites.
The Ministry of Tourism will be actively involved in guiding delegates to major attractions, giving them a memorable experience.
Hon. Cishak stressed the role of democracy in fostering international trust and encouraging foreign investments.
“You cannot talk about foreign investment if you do not embrace democratic principles,” he remarked.
He also shared that Plateau was chosen as one of six model states by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).
“We were the first state they selected, and they decided to make Plateau their home after seeing our passion,” Cishak said.
He recounted a visit to the United States, where he observed the independence of electoral commissions at the state level.
Cishak noted that Nigerian electoral bodies could learn from the U.S. approach, where each state enjoys full autonomy in managing elections.
He assured the public that Plateau is fully prepared to host the global conference, with approval already given by the Governor.
Hon. Cishak expressed gratitude to the Plateau Publishers Association for their support and called for continued collaboration to ensure the event’s success.
