The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) in collaboration with the University of Jos has successfully inducted seventy-four (74) graduate members into the institution. The event took place on Thursday 15th February 2024 at the Conference Hall, Crest Hotel in Jos.
Chairman of the occasion and Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof Tanko Ishaya who was represented by the Director of Academic Planning of the University, Prof J.P Chollom, while making his remark charged the inductees to be good ambassadors and uphold the values of the University of Jos.
Guest Speaker at the event and Vice Chancellor of the Amadu Bello University Zaria, Bldr. Prof Kabiru Bala who represented by the immediate past President of the institute Prof Y.D Izam, while speaking on the theme of the induction ‘Profession Competence, Prospects and Challenges amongst Builders’ warned inductees to adhere to best practices according to building laws. He added that “If you didn’t remember anything that you have been taught, If you intend to loose everything you have been taught as a builder activity mind of the builder, if your mind loses capacity to visualize the number of activities to produce a building that is where your problem has started. You can not mass quality produce a building, you can not do health and safety, you can not do construction”.
He encouraged them to exhibit self-discipline and leadership in the profession and contribute their best to the profession, will stressing that they must do everything professionally to ensure that they produce strong building that will stand the test of time.
In his goodwill message, the Dean Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof Gideon Baklit charged the inductees not to compromise standards but strive for uniqueness and excellence, while also maintaining integrity. Head of Department of the Depart of Building, University of Jos, Bldr. Prof Dorcas O. Adeagbo in her welcoming remark urged inductees to be exhibit the qualities they learnt from the university.
In his address, Chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Builders, Plateau State Chapter Bldr. Adeleye, Adedeji Paul also charged inductee to produce excellence in their endeavors.
“In a world where innovation, technology, and collaboration are paramount, it is critical for us to stay abreast of the latest trends, best practices, and advancements in our field. The construction industry is evolving rapidly, with new materials, techniques, and sustainable approaches emerging constantly. As professionals, it is our duty to embrace these changes, continuously acquire new knowledge, and strive for excellence.”.
While administering the ceremonial oath of induction, President of the Nigerian Institute of Building Bldr. Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa who was represented by the Hon. General Secretary of the Institute Bldr. Dr Yusuf Mahmood warned that this level of membership doesn’t give the inductees the licence to begin to work on their own, adding that this level of membership is for a period of time, and inductees were to be under the tutelage of other senior builders before getting higher fellowship membership.
High points of the event were the presentation of letters of admission into the institute to the new graduate members and also presentation of awards to deserving members.
