Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has explained the reason behind the continued detention of Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.According to him, it is impossible for the federal government to secure his release from custody because he is being prosecuted under state law. The Department of State Services (DSS) had ordered Malami to release Omoyele Sowore, a pro-democracy activist, and Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA).After the release of Sowore and Dasuki, there was an increase in the demand for the release of El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), and his wife, Zeenat. But Umar Gwandu, spokesman of the AGF, quoted him as saying the fate of El-Zakzaky can only be decided by the Kaduna state government. The AGF said the IMN leader’s case is different from that of Sowore and Dasuki who were prosecuted under federal law.
