The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conducted an assessment tour on May 22, 2024, to evaluate the extensive damage inflicted on eleven villages in Mikang Local Government Area (LGA) following the recent communal clashes between the Tehl ethnic group of Mikang and the Taroh people of Langtang North LGAs. The delegation was led by Eugene Nyelong, NEMA’s North Central Zonal Coordinator.
During the visit, the NEMA team, including Felix Adua (Head of Search and Rescue Unit, North Central Zone), Ugo Patricia (Head of Training Unit), and Bright Agbatse (Head of Relief Unit), met with Daniel Kungmi, Chairman of the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) for Mikang LGA. Nyelong emphasized the critical need for this visit to accurately assess the damage and expedite the provision of aid to the affected communities. He assured that NEMA is committed to delivering relief materials as swiftly as possible.
“The primary objective of our visit is to witness firsthand the extent of destruction and to ensure that adequate relief materials are dispatched promptly from our national headquarters,” Nyelong stated at the TIC office.
Responding to the NEMA team, Chairman Kungmi detailed the severe impact of the crisis, revealing that approximately 1,956 households were destroyed, including 1,771 round huts and 185 corrugated houses. He praised the efforts of the local assessment and rehabilitation committee but highlighted the urgent need for support in the rehabilitation phase. Despite the local government’s limited resources, significant efforts have been made to relocate displaced individuals.
Kungmi also mentioned that four trucks of grains from the federal government’s food reserve are expected to arrive in the LGA within the week. He stated that 20% of these supplies will be allocated to the victims of the crisis, with the remaining distributed to the most vulnerable populations in the area.
The visit underscores the pressing need for coordinated relief efforts to assist those affected by the communal clashes and to facilitate the rebuilding process in Mikang LGA.
