Nigerian rap legend M.I Abaga has weighed in on the ongoing rap battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, offering an interesting perspective on the rivalry.
In a statement, M.I noted that if Drake manages to make a strong comeback, he could surpass everyone once again. “Drake is the best storyteller,” he said. “Kendrick Lamar wasn’t even in my Top 10 before this moment, but what he did with the Drake battle has now put him in my Top 3.”
However, he expressed his belief that it’s difficult to objectively rank Kendrick over Drake. Comparing the Canadian rapper’s consistency to Michael Jordan’s dominance in basketball, M.I stated, “Drake was doing it every year for 15 years straight. You can’t deny his greatness.”
Despite Drake’s longevity, M.I acknowledged that Kendrick might have been the better rapper all along, likening their dynamic to LeBron James and Steph Curry’s rivalry in the NBA.
He also shared a personal connection to the situation, revealing that he once faced a similar challenge in his career. “I won’t lie, I felt a bit sympathetic for Drake, because I’ve been through something similar. No matter what I did, at some point in my career, the rap community in Nigeria said I was boring.”
In a lighter note, he hinted that the Afrobeats community might be hoping for a similar lyrical showdown between Davido and Wizkid, mirroring the competitive energy of the Drake vs. Kendrick battle.
