The Plateau State Government has announced the revival of train services within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, revealing that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) will soon assume full control of operations.
This development comes after a period of inactivity following a test-run phase that began in May 2024 and ended in December the same year.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang had initiated the rehabilitation of railway lines and rolling stock as a strategic response to ease the hardship caused by fuel subsidy removal.
The government-funded project focused on overhauling the Jos-Bukuru-Kuru railway corridor, with the aim of restoring affordable transport options for Plateau residents.
Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Davou Jatau, disclosed that despite the successful test-run, operations had to pause in January 2025 because NRC had yet to assume its operational mandate.
“There were some factors that delayed NRC’s takeover in January, but we have now reached a firm understanding,” Jatau explained.
He assured the public that NRC is now prepared to fully resume services, with a new flag-off date to be announced shortly.
According to him, “The test-run has proven successful, and we are confident that the full operation will be smooth and sustainable.”
Jatau emphasized that the project not only benefits Plateau State but has drawn the attention of the Federal Government as well.
He revealed that the initiative has sparked interest in rehabilitating the Heipang–Bauchi–Gombe and Hoss–Kafanchan rail corridors.
“This is fostering a stronger inter-state relationship and creating fresh economic links through rail transport,” he noted.
Jatau praised the foresight of Governor Mutfwang, calling the railway revival a landmark achievement for the people of Plateau.
He concluded by urging the public to stay alert for the official flag-off date, promising a new era of convenient, affordable rail transport in the state.
