Micro-influencers from Plateau, Bauchi, and Gombe States recently embarked on an impactful community engagement exposure tour organized by Search for Common Ground (SFCG) and Youth CARE, immersing themselves in the daily lives of communities across Plateau State.
This exposure tour, supported by Joint Initiative for Strategic Religious Action (JISRA) and Inclusive Religious Engagement In Nigeria Enhanced by Women (IRENEW), focused on strengthening Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB), promoting peaceful coexistence, and fostering inter-religious tolerance in a state rich in culture and diversity.
Throughout the tour, influencers visited several communities that are part of JISRA and IRENEW’s FoRB programs, where they witnessed firsthand efforts that created inclusive environments grounded in respect and understanding. By engaging with these communities, influencers observed how different religious groups live together, embracing diversity as a cornerstone of peace.
A key highlight of the tour was the influencers’ visit to Mista Ali and Rafiki, two communities where interfaith relationships thrive. These communities showcase daily interactions in which Christians and Muslims not only coexist but celebrate each other’s presence, share meals, and, in some cases, intermarry.
Influencers observed that despite diverse religious practices, residents prioritize peace and the well-being of their neighbors, illustrating FoRB’s critical role in maintaining unity.
Mrs. Munira Yarima Askira, Program Manager of Youth CARE, shared that the visit aimed to deepen influencers’ understanding of peaceful coexistence so they can effectively share these lessons with their audiences. “Their platforms have the power to change narratives and inspire unity,” she noted.
Through the Youth CARE project’s collaboration with JISRA, IRENEW, and local agencies, influencers gained valuable insights into how FoRB principles are integrated into daily life in Plateau communities.
By connecting with JISRA and IRENEW programs, the influencers explored how advocacy for FoRB and peacebuilding can go hand in hand. The tour demonstrated that creating spaces for open religious expression and economic empowerment supports a sustainable culture of interfaith harmony. Influencers returned from the visit motivated to leverage their voices to support FoRB, aiming to inspire youth to champion tolerance and acceptance.
A micro influencer from Plateau state, Miss Jessica Gambo remarked, “Experiencing how communities maintain unity despite religious differences has reshaped my perspective. I’m eager to share this journey with my followers and inspire others to embrace tolerance.”
Reflecting on the experience, A Micro Influencer from Bauchi State, Comr. Aminu Guyaba stated, “It was powerful to see communities living out these values daily. Sharing these stories will hopefully encourage my followers to respect others’ beliefs, promoting a cycle of understanding.” Their observations and engagement with FoRB initiatives empowered them to challenge misconceptions and spread messages of inclusivity.
At the Plateau State Micro Finance Development Agency (PLASMIDA), Director General Hon. Bomkam Ali Wuyep, represented by Barrister Samson Karami, emphasized that economic programs and opportunities are available to all residents, irrespective of religious affiliation.
He shared that PLASMIDA’s inclusivity is essential to fostering a culture of peace, addressing youth unemployment, and supporting inter-religious tolerance. “Our initiatives are for everyone,” he stated, “because peace thrives where opportunity is equitable.” The influencers saw how FoRB and economic empowerment intersect to build resilient communities.
The tour also included a significant visit to Operation Rainbow Headquarters, where Brig. General Gakji G. Shipi (Rtd), the special adviser on security to the Plateau State Governor, highlighted Operation Rainbow’s commitment to interfaith peace and security. Shipi encouraged influencers to advocate for tolerance, stating, “If God wanted us all to be the same, He would have made it so. We must respect our differences.” This visit underscored the influencers’ role in amplifying messages of peace and religious freedom across digital platforms.
As these influencers share their experiences, they are expected to play a key role in promoting peace and FoRB across Plateau, Bauchi, and Gombe States. Their voices can foster a ripple effect, inspiring young people to advocate for religious freedom and to see diversity as an asset rather than a dividing factor.
The tour provided a renewed perspective on the potential of digital platforms to build bridges between religious communities. Influencers are now poised to drive a positive shift in perception, encouraging their audiences to embrace interfaith tolerance, recognize the importance of FoRB, and contribute to building peaceful communities throughout Nigeria.
