Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to combat drugs abuse across the state.

Governor Mutfwang emphasized this during a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Muhammad Buba Marwa (Rtd), at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

In a statement issued by Mr Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs, contained that Governor Mutfwang praised Gen. Marwa for his “resilience and dedication” in addressing the scourge of substance abuse nationwide, recognizing the significant efforts made by the NDLEA under his leadership.

Mutfwang also acknowledged the support that his administration has received from the NDLEA in its efforts to curb the menace in Plateau State. He called for greater synergy between the state and the agency to further combat what he referred to as the “killer disease” of drug abuse.

Governor Mutfwang stressed the critical importance of the NDLEA’s role in ensuring the well-being of families across Plateau State. He noted that nearly every home has been affected by the scourge of drug abuse, describing it as a “national crisis” that requires urgent and concerted action. “We have closely observed your performance, and it is clear that since you took over, the NDLEA has executed its duties with greater vigor and determination. Many who profit from the illicit drug trade have found it increasingly difficult to operate since your arrival,” the Governor remarked.

In light of these challenges, Governor Mutfwang called for enhanced collaboration at all levels, particularly in leveraging intelligence networks beyond traditional roadblocks to trace the origins and transportation routes of illegal substances entering the country. He expressed a strong desire to explore better ways of collaboration to address the issue more effectively on the Plateau.

In response, Brig. Gen. Marwa commended Governor Mutfwang for his people-oriented programs, which have had a positive impact on the lives of Plateau citizens. He also praised the Governor’s courage and maturity in handling security issues within the state. Gen. Marwa assured Governor Mutfwang of the NDLEA’s commitment to achieving lasting peace and a drug-free Plateau, emphasizing that the fight against illicit drugs must be comprehensive for the country to overcome this life-threatening challenge.

Gen. Marwa highlighted that Plateau State serves as a gateway to the North-West and underscored the need for a robust battle against both suppliers and consumers of illegal substances. He also revealed plans for the NDLEA to build barracks across the 36 states for its personnel, as drug addicts often turn against officers after being released on bail. This project, he explained, will commence in the six geopolitical zones.

In addition to his meeting with the NDLEA, Governor Mutfwang paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Anite. During this visit, they held strategic discussions on revitalizing small-scale businesses in Plateau State to benefit all citizens.
