Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has described Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans as Manchester United’s best signing of the summer transfer window.

Mikel made the remarks on The Obi One Podcast, expressing surprise that the Premier League giants secured the midfielder for just £35 million.

“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans. Honestly, how on earth did Manchester United sign him for £35 million? That is an absolute bargain,” Mikel said.

The former Chelsea star said he had watched Tielemans closely before and during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and was convinced of the Belgian’s quality.

According to Mikel, Tielemans’ ability to play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder gives Manchester United valuable tactical flexibility.

“He can operate as a six, an eight or a ten. Having a player who can play in different positions gives you options, and Tielemans has that versatility,” he added.

Mikel also praised the midfielder’s technical qualities, saying he scores goals, threatens from set-pieces, keeps possession well and reads the game intelligently despite lacking pace.

He concluded that Tielemans stands above every other midfielder signed this summer, although the Belgian is yet to make his Manchester United debut after suffering an injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Political leaders, policymakers, academics and development experts on Thursday in Jos canvassed bold reforms and stronger institutions as Nigeria pursues its ambition of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

The call came during the second edition of Colloquium 2.0 held in honour of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda 58th birthday celebration, at Crispan Suites and Event Centre, where participants also reflected on his leadership journey and contributions to national development.

In his welcome address, the National Convener of Colloquium 2.0, Comr. Beduna Bulus Gajnung Seri, said the gathering was convened not merely to celebrate Prof. Yilwatda but to document his leadership journey, values and contributions to national development while he is still alive.

He said the colloquium was conceived as an intellectual platform to preserve the ideals of purposeful leadership and inspire future generations.

“Most times, people are celebrated long after they are gone. This colloquium is not just about eulogising Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; it is about preserving his legacy and inspiring future generations to embrace purposeful leadership,” he said.

Giving an overview of the event, Patience Shishang described the colloquium as a platform for promoting visionary leadership and stimulating intellectual conversations on Nigeria’s future.

She said beyond celebrating Prof. Yilwatda’s achievements in academia, electoral administration, humanitarian service and politics, the event seeks to inspire young Nigerians to embrace integrity, innovation, character and selfless service.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shaibu Abubakar Audu, congratulated Yilwatda on his 58th birthday and commended the organisers for staging what he described as a remarkable event.

Audu praised the APC National Chairman’s leadership, saying he had successfully coordinated the party’s nationwide presidential, governorship and National Assembly primaries while driving reforms that have expanded the APC’s membership.

“The National Chairman has done an excellent job. He is driving reforms that have expanded APC membership to over 15 million, making it the largest political party in Africa. We are confident he will continue to provide the leadership needed to deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision,” he said.

Also speaking, Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, represented by his deputy, Ngo Josephine Chundung Piyo, described the colloquium as an opportunity to reflect on the values of visionary leadership, integrity and service to humanity.

She said the greatest tribute to Prof. Yilwatda was not merely to celebrate his achievements but to uphold the ideals that have shaped his life. According to her, sustainable development depends on investments in education, innovation, digital technology, healthcare and human capital.

“The life of Prof. Nentawe demonstrates that excellence is intentional and greatness is never accidental. It is cultivated through discipline, sacrifice, lifelong learning, resilience and faith,” she said.

Delivering the keynote address titled, “Achieving a Trillion-Dollar Economy in Nigeria: What Needs to Be Done,” Prof. Pam Dung Sha said Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030 is achievable but would require bold reforms, stronger institutions and sustained economic growth.

He noted that with Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) currently between $291 billion and $375 billion and an annual growth rate of about four per cent, the country must increase its growth rate to between 10 and 12 per cent to attain the target.

Prof. Sha called for stronger collaboration among the Federal, State and Local Governments, the private sector and development partners. He also advocated increased investment in infrastructure, industrialisation, innovation, education, healthcare and human capital, alongside stronger institutions and improved accountability.

“A trillion-dollar economy is not just about the size of our GDP. We must build an economy that creates jobs, reduces poverty, modernises education and healthcare, fixes infrastructure, tackles insecurity and puts food on the table of every Nigerian,” he said.

The colloquium also featured a panel session on the theme, with discussions centred on practical strategies for achieving Nigeria’s $1 trillion economy target. Panelists included the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Benard Doro; Prof. Pam Dung Sha; Prof. Chris Kwaja; and Dr. Rosemary Anga, who examined policy reforms, leadership, innovation and human capital development as critical drivers of economic growth.

Awards were also presented to individuals recognised for their outstanding contributions to leadership, public service, academia and national development. The recipients included Tongnan Lami, Salihu Salisu, Ibrahim Raja, Ngozi Nancy Eze, Veronica James, Hassana Tijani, Winner Abdulrazak, Nfon Cyril, Prof. Pam Dung Sha among others.

Responding, Prof. Yilwatda expressed gratitude to the organisers, particularly Plateau youths, for their unity and commitment in making the colloquium a success.

He also thanked his family, friends, members of the APC National Working Committee and the Plateau State Government for the honour, describing the event as one of the defining moments of his life.

Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Yilwatda recalled failing the Common Entrance Examination and attending a government secondary school before rising through hard work, faith and God’s grace.

He urged young Nigerians not to allow their background or present circumstances to define their future, insisting that determination, discipline and integrity remain the keys to success.

“I sincerely thank the youths for their collaboration in making this colloquium a success. My story is proof that where you begin does not determine where you will end. I pray that every young person here will have a better life than I have today and achieve even greater success. That is my greatest desire and legacy,” he said.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Maryam Shetty, has described the National Chairman of the party, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, as a visionary leader committed to national development and inclusive politics.

Shetty stated this on Thursday in Jos while speaking at the second edition of Colloquium 2.0 organised to mark Prof. Yilwatda’s 58th birthday.

She said the APC National Chairman has continued to demonstrate humility, competence and a leadership style that inspires confidence across political and social divides.

“Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda represents a new generation of leadership built on integrity, competence and service to the nation.”

The APC stalwart, who described herself as a firm believer in the Nigerian project and an advocate of fairness and women’s inclusion in politics, urged leaders to create more opportunities for women and young people to contribute to national development.

She noted that sustainable democracy can only thrive when governance is inclusive and every segment of society is given a sense of belonging.

“Our democracy will be stronger when women and young people are deliberately included in leadership and decision-making.”

She congratulated Prof. Yilwatda on his 58th birthday and prayed for wisdom, strength and good health as he continues to lead the ruling party and contribute to Nigeria’s development.

The Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, has cautioned security agencies against what he described as selective justice in the handling of violent attacks in Plateau State, insisting that every victim deserves equal protection and justice.

Rev. Dachomo made the appeal during a visit to Tarai in Jol District of Riyom Local Government Area, where he sympathised with families of victims killed in a recent attack and called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Addressing security personnel, community leaders and mourners, the cleric lamented that many attacks on communities have gone without arrests, leaving victims’ families without justice and deepening public frustration.

He recalled the killing of members of his own family, saying he was yet to hear of anyone being arrested in connection with the incident despite the passage of time.

“My nine siblings were killed, and to this day, I have not heard that anyone has been arrested in connection with their deaths.”

Rev. Dachomo said security agencies should ensure that justice is served fairly, regardless of the identity of the victims, warning that unequal responses to attacks could undermine public confidence.

While commending security forces for taking swift action whenever personnel are attacked, he appealed for the same commitment in cases involving civilians.

“When security personnel are attacked, action is taken immediately, and I appreciate that. But when members of our communities are killed, we hardly hear of those responsible being arrested. Justice should not be one-sided.”

The cleric urged authorities to identify and prosecute perpetrators of attacks before communities lose confidence in the justice system.

He also called on the Federal Government to be sincere about the country’s security challenges, maintaining that acknowledging the problem is essential to finding lasting solutions.

“Nigerian government, stop telling the world that there is peace. Acknowledge that we have a security problem. When we admit we have a problem, we can begin to find solutions, and God will help us overcome it.”

Rev. Dachomo further appealed to religious leaders across faiths to speak openly against violence affecting their respective communities, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through truth, justice and mutual respect.

“The killing of Christians in Nigeria is still going on. It has never stopped. I also want Muslim leaders to speak out against the killing of Muslims so that, together, we can pursue justice and achieve lasting peace for everyone.”

He urged government, security agencies and community leaders to work together to end the cycle of violence and restore peace across Plateau State.

The Executive Chairman of Riyom Local Government Council, Hon. Sati Bature Shuwa, has visited Jol community following the tragic attack that occurred on Tuesday night, claiming the lives of three brothers and throwing the community into mourning.

Addressing the grieving community, Hon. Shuwa lamented the worsening security situation in Riyom Local Government, describing the persistent attacks as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

He recalled that only a day earlier, three security personnel were ambushed and killed at Danwal in Ganawuri District while on patrol and their carted away with their firearms.

According to the Chairman, the officers were attacked by suspected Fulani terrorists who have continued to unleash violence across communities in the local government.

“The attack on Jol is yet another painful reminder of the security challenges confronting our people. Government cannot continue to fold its arms while innocent citizens are killed and communities are left in grief,” he said.

Hon. Shuwa called on the Federal Government to strengthen security operations in Riyom Local Government and Plateau State, stressing that the attacks have now extended beyond civilians to include security personnel.

“The Federal Government must recognize that even our security operatives have become targets of these terrorists. This calls for more decisive and coordinated action to end these senseless killings,” he added.

Following his visit to Jol, the Chairman handed over a refurbished Hilux patrol vehicle, rehabilitated by the Riyom Local Government Council, to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Riyom Division, of the Nigeria Police Force.

He noted that the gesture demonstrates the Council’s commitment to supporting security agencies in safeguarding lives and property across the local government.

During the burial of the victims, Rev. Evangelist Ezekiel Dachomo encouraged members of the community not to lose hope despite the recurring attacks. He urged them to remain steadfast in faith and continue to stand in defence of their God-given ancestral land.

Damba Dang

The Federal Government has announced plans to construct a new dam at Limpye in Ampang East District of Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State as part of efforts to improve water supply, irrigation and hydropower generation in the state.

It also assured that the Mangu Dam in Pankshin Local Government Area, now about 90 per cent completed, would soon be completed and commissioned to serve communities across the state.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, disclosed this during an assessment visit to the proposed Limpye Dam site alongside officials of the ministry and technical experts.

According to him, the inspection followed the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the ministry to assess dams nationwide with a view to rehabilitating existing facilities and developing new ones where necessary.

“The proposed Limpye Dam will provide clean, safe and sustainable water to communities in Kanke and surrounding areas. It will also support irrigation farming, create employment opportunities for women and youths, and increase hydropower generation for the national grid,” Utsev said.

The minister explained that construction of the dam would commence after the completion of feasibility studies, detailed engineering designs and approval by the Federal Executive Council, FEC.

He reiterated that the Mangu Dam project had reached 90 per cent completion and would provide irrigation facilities, potable water supply and electricity generation when completed.

“The Mangu Dam is nearing completion and will soon be commissioned to deliver its intended benefits to the people,” he said.

Utsev further disclosed that ongoing dam projects across the country, including those along the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway corridor, were designed to improve domestic water supply, support year-round agriculture, reduce farmer-herder conflicts and boost electricity generation.

He also noted that rehabilitation works at the Alau Dam in Borno State were progressing, while several other dam projects nationwide were at advanced stages of completion.

Director of Dams and Reservoir Operations and Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Ali Ibrahim Dallah, said the visit was aimed at carrying out a pre-feasibility assessment of the proposed Limpye Dam site.

“This is a pre-feasibility visit to determine the suitability of the site. Subsequent visits will involve detailed feasibility studies, engineering designs and the preparation of comprehensive technical reports by experts,” Dallah said.

He explained that the technical assessments would guide the planning and eventual execution of the project to ensure it meets the required engineering and environmental standards.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to delivering critical water infrastructure projects across the country, saying the projects would improve access to potable water, strengthen food security and promote sustainable national development.
