Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has tested positive for Covid-19, the club announced.

“The analysis of those new samples within the laboratory has determined that our trainer, Diego Simeone, has given a positive result for Covid-19,” read the club statement.

“Fortunately, our coach doesn’t present any symptoms and is at his home isolated and fulfilling the corresponding quarantine after being with the team last Monday.”

Simeone was absent from training earlier today.

Atletico’s first LaLiga match against Granada isn’t scheduled to be played until September 27 because the club are given overtime off before starting the season.

Simeone took the helm of Atletico Madrid in 2012 and helped his team claim two UEFA Europa League titles and as many UEFA Super Cup trophies.
