The event, held at Crispan Hotel, Jos, was organised around the theme, “Let’s Break It Down,” with stakeholders calling for increased awareness, early testing, treatment and stronger collaboration to tackle the disease.

Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, said the state continues to face a significant hepatitis burden, stressing the need for residents to know their status and seek medical care early.

“We want to encourage our people to go and get tested so that when you are tested positive, we’ll know where to appropriately refer you, and if you are negative, we’ll give you the vaccine,” Ba’amlong said.

The commissioner disclosed that the ministry established three testing sites in Jos North and Jos South as part of activities marking the day, adding that plans are underway to extend awareness and testing services to all 17 local government areas.

He explained that while hepatitis vaccines for infants remain available free through routine immunisation programmes, the government is working with partners to reduce the cost of adult vaccination.

Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Duguru Mary John, described viral hepatitis as a major health challenge, warning that untreated hepatitis B can lead to liver cirrhosis and cancer.

She advised residents to insist on screened blood during transfusion, avoid sharing sharp objects, embrace vaccination and undergo regular screening to reduce the spread of the disease.

Dr. Mary called for collective action among government, health workers, communities and development partners to address stigma, poor access to care and other barriers affecting hepatitis prevention and treatment.

The Plateau State HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme Coordinator, Mrs. Mariah Pawa, said the annual observance provides an opportunity to raise awareness about hepatitis, which she described as a silent killer.

She noted that the state government has strengthened hepatitis prevention through screening of pregnant women, vaccination of newborns against hepatitis B and expansion of community screening and referral services.

Pawa added that Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration has supported the procurement of dual test kits to improve access to hepatitis testing in health facilities and communities across the state.

In his goodwill message, The World Health Organisation (WHO) State Coordinator, Dr. Mahdi Musa, stressed the need to break barriers limiting access to testing, vaccination and treatment, reaffirming WHO’s support to the state’s hepatitis response.

Similarly, Dr. Solomon Wekpe, Head of Office, APIN Public Health Initiatives, Plateau State, pledged continued technical and financial support to strengthen hepatitis prevention, testing and treatment services.

Dr. Ajik Magaji, State Coordinator of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), urged residents to access free vaccines available at health facilities and support efforts towards timely testing and treatment.

In his closing remark, The Permanent Secretary, Plateau State Ministry of Health, Bitrus Hosea, commended stakeholders for their participation and encouraged residents to make use of available screening services to protect themselves and their communities.

Speaking during a press briefing in Jos on Sunday, the government said the outbreak has affected Mangu, Jos North, Jos South and Barkin Ladi LGAs, with only three patients currently on admission, all receiving treatment in Jos North.

The state disclosed that Mangu LGA, where the first laboratory-confirmed case was detected in June 2026, has recorded 159 suspected cases and 10 deaths across 64 settlements in nine wards. It, however, noted that there is currently no active cholera case in the LGA, with the last reported case on July 22, 2026.

In Jos North, the government said 277 suspected cases, seven Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) reactive cases, one laboratory-confirmed case and four deaths have been recorded across 61 settlements in 14 wards.

It added that Jos South recorded only one laboratory-confirmed case, while Barkin Ladi has reported 23 suspected cases and two RDT reactive cases, with no death recorded.

The government said, “Although transmission has been interrupted in Mangu LGA, cholera continues to spread across other affected local government areas. The recent increase in cases highlights the need for sustained vigilance, early reporting and strong community participation.”

According to the government, surveillance has been strengthened through active case searches, expanded community surveillance and improved reporting systems, while treatment centres have been supplied with Oral Rehydration Salts, intravenous fluids, antibiotics and other essential commodities.

It said, “Free or subsidised treatment is being provided for cholera patients in designated treatment centres, while additional Oral Rehydration Points will be established in Jos North LGA.”

The government also disclosed that Rapid Diagnostic Test kits have been distributed to affected LGAs, while laboratory confirmation through stool culture is ongoing to support surveillance and guide public health interventions.

It said intensive community sensitisation, engagement with traditional and religious leaders, media campaigns and house-to-house hygiene education are being sustained to promote early treatment and discourage self-medication.

The government further revealed that water, sanitation and hygiene interventions, including household water treatment, environmental sanitation, safe water storage and monitoring of contaminated water sources, have been intensified across affected communities.

It advised residents to drink only treated water, wash their hands regularly with soap and clean water, maintain proper sanitation, cook food thoroughly and report symptoms such as sudden watery diarrhoea or vomiting immediately at the nearest health facility.

The Plateau State Government reaffirmed its commitment to ending the outbreak, appreciating Governor Caleb Mutfwang, healthcare workers, rapid response teams, development partners, including WHO, UNICEF and FHI 360-EPIC, as well as the media for their support in the ongoing response.

Declaring the programme open, Nshe said the initiative reflected his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through strategic partnerships with relevant institutions.

He said Shendam’s selection for the outreach was a testament to the long-standing relationship between the council and the NYSC, noting that the partnership had continued to flourish for over two decades.

“There are quite a number of people here who would not have had the money to go to the conventional hospital. Today, they are receiving free medical tests, free drugs and other healthcare services. We sincerely appreciate the NYSC for bringing this programme to our people and we will continue to partner with them.”

The chairman disclosed that his administration provides incentives for medical corps members serving in Shendam, including free accommodation and a ₦150,000 allowance for doctors, while nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists receive ₦70,000 to encourage more health professionals to serve in the area.

“To our corps members, especially the medical professionals, continue to give your best wherever you are posted. The little incentives we provide are to encourage you to serve our people. When you have the opportunity to make a difference, do more for humanity because life is about adding value to others.”

Nshe also highlighted ongoing investments in the health sector, including the construction and renovation of primary healthcare centres and a modern laboratory, assuring residents that his administration would continue to prioritise quality healthcare.

Speaking at the event, the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, Mr. Jonathan Iliya Yavala, described HIRD as a quarterly intervention through which the scheme delivers free healthcare services to rural communities. He said Shendam was selected in recognition of the council’s support for the NYSC and the dedication of corps members serving in the locality.

Yavala revealed that over 400 residents had already benefited from the outreach, expressing optimism that the figure would exceed 600 before the end of the exercise. He added that the overwhelming turnout necessitated the replenishment of drugs and medical supplies.

He said beneficiaries were screened and treated for malaria, hepatitis B and C, diabetes and other health conditions, describing the programme as a major step towards improving healthcare access for rural dwellers.

The Longamai of Shendam, HRH Martins Shaldas III, commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention for vulnerable residents who could not afford medical treatment. He also appreciated the NYSC management for bringing the outreach to Shendam and urged the medical team to remain patient while attending to beneficiaries.

Nrs. Nfonuso Samuel said the outreach was fulfilling for the medical team as it enabled them to provide free treatment and essential drugs to residents who could not afford healthcare. She also commended the impressive turnout and described Shendam as a peaceful, welcoming and hospitable community.

Dr. Tomisin Ilori said the outreach had improved access to healthcare for rural dwellers through health education, medical consultations and treatment. He, however, stressed the need for sustained awareness campaigns on hypertension, diabetes, antenatal care and routine immunisation.

One of the beneficiaries, Jessica Goyit, thanked the NYSC and the Shendam Local Government Council for the initiative, saying the free medical services had brought relief to many rural residents who could not afford hospital care. She added that beneficiaries were properly screened before receiving medication.

The media parley, held at the Crispan Event Centre in Jos, brought together health professionals, development partners and journalists to strategise on the successful implementation of the campaign aimed at protecting children under five from malaria.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, described the media as a critical partner in malaria elimination, saying sustained public enlightenment remains key to the success of the intervention.

He said Plateau had made remarkable progress in malaria control, with prevalence dropping from 18.8 per cent in 2021 to 2.8 per cent in 2025 due to increased government commitment, effective implementation of the SMC programme and the support of development partners.

“The prevalence rate has dropped from 18.8 per cent in 2021 to 2.8 per cent in 2025, representing about an 87 per cent reduction. It shows that malaria elimination is possible, and with sustained support for the SMC programme, we can achieve zero malaria,” he said.

In his presentation, Project Manager of the IMPACT Project, Nrs. Ndak Andarawus, said the 2026 SMC campaign targets 1,007,652 eligible children across Plateau State.

He disclosed that over 11,500 health workers, supervisors, volunteer drug distributors and community leaders had been mobilised for the exercise, while trained volunteers would administer preventive malaria drugs through house-to-house visits supported by digital monitoring systems to ensure every eligible child is reached.

Andarawus said the programme had contributed significantly to the reduction of malaria prevalence in the state through strong government support, effective partnerships and active community participation.

Project Manager of Malaria Consortium, Dr. Mbwas Mashor, said the media engagement was organised to strengthen collaboration with journalists and stakeholders to improve public awareness and acceptance of the SMC campaign.

He explained that Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention is a World Health Organisation (WHO)-recommended intervention that provides safe and effective preventive malaria medicines for children aged three to 59 months during the peak malaria transmission season.

“We want the media to strengthen public awareness, promote accurate information and support community acceptance of the SMC campaign so that every eligible child is protected,” Mashor said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health described the media parley as timely and urged journalists to sustain accurate reporting on malaria prevention to improve community participation and campaign success.

Also speaking, SBCC Consultant, Mr. Kaskida Yilyok, said the media plays a vital role in shaping public perception, combating misinformation and encouraging caregivers to ensure eligible children receive the preventive medicines.

Programme Officer, Miss Kachollom Gyang, stressed that safeguarding remains a key component of the SMC programme, saying staff, partners and volunteers are regularly trained to protect children and vulnerable adults from abuse and exploitation.

She added that the programme operates a zero-tolerance policy against abuse and encouraged members of the public to report any safeguarding concerns for prompt investigation.

The Plateau State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Yilji Kumtap, commended the Ministry of Health and the State Malaria Elimination Programme for the progress recorded in malaria control and pledged the association’s continued support.

Similarly, Pharm. Godwin Nimyel, representing the Plateau State Chairman of the Pharmacy Society of Nigeria (PSN), reaffirmed the society’s support for the programme, stressing the need for quality-assured medicines and strict regulation to eliminate substandard drugs.

Also, Dr. Molsat Emmanuel Sydney, representing the Plateau State Primary Health Care Board, lauded the Ministry of Health, the State Malaria Elimination Programme and Malaria Consortium for their efforts in reducing malaria, assuring of the board’s continued support for the SMC campaign at the grassroots.

“The College of Health Technology, Pankshin, is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in this country, yet its development is not commensurate with its years of existence. The issue of land and expansion must be addressed if the institution is to meet future demands.”

The commissioner disclosed that government is exploring measures to secure and utilize available land for the institution’s growth, including discussions on adjoining properties that could support future development projects.

She further revealed that the state government remains committed to strengthening the college through programme accreditation, improved staffing, and enhanced infrastructure, noting that efforts are already underway to position the institution for National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes.

“We are looking at ways to create more space for the college and attract the facilities needed for expansion. Our goal is to ensure that the institution continues to grow and provide quality training for health professionals.”

Gang also urged alumni, community leaders, and well-placed individuals from Plateau Central and beyond to support the institution through infrastructural projects and other interventions that would contribute to its long-term development.

She maintained that collective support from stakeholders would help transform the college into a stronger centre for health education and manpower development, while improving opportunities for students and staff alike.

“We are grateful for this training that has improved the knowledge of the girls in our home on menstrual hygiene and the production of reusable pads.

The provision of these reusable pads will enable the children to experience the benefits of eco-friendly products,” she stated.

Speaking during a press briefing, he described this year’s theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must,” as both a call to action and a message of hope.

He noted that while global efforts have led to major successes, malaria remains a serious public health threat, particularly in Africa where the majority of deaths occur. “Despite remarkable gains, malaria continues to pose a significant challenge, especially among children under five,” he said.

Dr. Ba’amlong highlighted Nigeria’s progress, stating that malaria prevalence has dropped from 42 percent in 2010 to 15 percent in 2025. He attributed this to improved access to preventive measures such as seasonal malaria chemoprevention, insecticide-treated nets, and prompt diagnosis and treatment.

The Commissioner, however, emphasized that Nigeria still bears a high burden of malaria cases and deaths globally. He warned that challenges such as funding gaps, drug and insecticide resistance, climate change, and weak health systems continue to threaten progress.

Focusing on Plateau State, Dr. Ba’amlong described the state’s achievements as “remarkable and unprecedented.” He revealed that malaria prevalence declined significantly from 21.4 percent in 2018 to 18.8 percent in 2021, and further to 2.8 percent in 2025.

“This represents an extraordinary 87 percent reduction, the highest recorded decline among states in Nigeria,” he stated, adding that the success is a result of strong leadership, effective partnerships, and community engagement.

He explained that through the State Malaria Elimination Programme, over one million children were reached with preventive treatment during the 2024 and 2025 campaigns. “We achieved over 100 percent coverage in seasonal malaria chemoprevention across communities,” he added.

Dr. Ba’amlong also noted that more than 400 health facilities across the state have been supported with free malaria testing kits, drugs, and other commodities, improving access to treatment, especially for children and pregnant women.

Despite the progress, he cautioned that the fight is not over. “Residual transmission in vulnerable communities, low use of preventive tools, and funding constraints remain key concerns,” he said.

He called for sustained investment and innovation, urging stakeholders to strengthen surveillance systems, expand preventive therapies, and invest in new tools such as malaria vaccines and next-generation nets.

The Commissioner further appealed to residents to take responsibility by adopting preventive measures. “Sleep under treated nets, test before treatment, complete your medications, and keep your environment clean,” he advised.

Dr. Ba’amlong expressed appreciation to Governor Caleb Mutfwang and development partners for their support, noting that their contributions have positioned Plateau as a leading example in malaria control.

He concluded with optimism, saying, “Malaria elimination is achievable. With collective effort and sustained commitment, Plateau State can achieve zero malaria in the near future.”
