The Nigerian Army has appointed new General Officers Commanding, GOCs, for some of its newly established divisions following the expansion of the force structure from eight to 12 divisions.

The appointments, approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the creation of four additional divisions.

In a statement on Wednesday, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Apollonia Anele, said the development was aimed at strengthening national security and improving the Army’s operational effectiveness.

She said the new divisions would commence operations after attaining Initial Operational Capability, IOC, while efforts would continue towards achieving Full Operational Capability, FOC.

According to Anele, the expansion would strengthen command and control, improve operational coordination and facilitate faster deployment of troops and resources in response to emerging security threats.

Under the new structure, 1 Division, Kaduna, will cover Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, while 2 Division, Ibadan, will oversee Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo states.

The 3 Division, Jos, will cover Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe states, while the newly established 5 Division, Makurdi, will be responsible for Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi states.

The 6 Division, Port Harcourt, will cover Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, while 7 Division, Maiduguri, and 8 Division, Sokoto, will retain responsibility for Borno-Yobe and Sokoto-Kebbi-Zamfara respectively.

The newly created 9 Division, Ilorin, will cover Kwara and Niger states, while 10 Division, Jalingo, will oversee Taraba and Adamawa. The 81 Division, Lagos, and 82 Division, Enugu, will retain their existing areas of responsibility.

The 83 Division, headquartered in Benin City, will cover Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states when activated later in the year.

To lead the new formations, Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been redeployed to 9 Division, Ilorin, as GOC and Commander, Operation SAVANNA SHIELD.

Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife was appointed GOC 10 Division, Jalingo, while Major General Moses Gara will head 5 Division, Makurdi, and simultaneously serve as Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE.

Major General Auwalu Mahmuda has also been redeployed to 2 Division, Ibadan, as GOC.

Charging the new commanders to justify the confidence reposed in them, Lt. Gen. Shaibu urged them to “provide visionary leadership, sustain operational momentum and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and mission effectiveness.”

The COAS described the creation of the additional divisions as “a historic milestone in the transformation of the Nigerian Army,” saying it would strengthen command and control, border security and the deployment of troops against emerging threats.

The Army expressed confidence that the expanded structure would strengthen joint and multi-agency operations and contribute to restoring lasting peace, security and stability across the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions, alongside the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture.

The development was announced on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, the expansion is aimed at improving the Army’s operational capacity and response to Nigeria’s changing security challenges.

Under the new structure, four additional divisions will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City.

The existing divisions are located in Kaduna, Ibadan, Jos, Port Harcourt, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Lagos and Enugu.

The Presidency said the new formations would strengthen command and control, improve border security and protect critical national infrastructure.

It added that the expansion would also boost counter-insurgency operations and enable faster military response to emerging threats across the country.

“The expanded force structure is part of the administration’s sustained investment in the Armed Forces,” the Presidency said, noting that the investment also covers modern military equipment, improved troop welfare and force modernisation.

The new 5 Division in Makurdi will oversee Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi states, while the 9 Division in Ilorin will cover Kwara and Niger states.

The 10 Division in Jalingo will be responsible for Taraba and Adamawa states, while the 83 Division in Benin City will cover Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states.

Implementation of the new structure will be in two phases, with the first phase involving the 5, 9 and 10 Divisions and reorganisation of existing formations expected to be completed by September 2026.

The second phase, which includes the establishment of the 83 Division and further restructuring, is expected to be completed by December 2026.

President Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their service, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Armed Forces remain well-equipped, motivated and ready to defend Nigeria.

A total of 5,876 recruits officially joined the ranks of the Nigerian Army after completing training at the Depot Nigerian Army Training School during the 90 Regular Recruits Intake graduation ceremony in Zaria.

The new soldiers were formally inducted during the Passing Out Parade held on Saturday at the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, Kaduna State, marking the successful completion of months of intensive military training.

Addressing the recruits, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, charged them to be courageous and decisive in confronting terrorists and other criminal elements threatening the nation’s peace and security.

He said the recruits had undergone rigorous military training, including Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency operations, and were now ready to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at safeguarding Nigeria.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to denying criminal elements any safe haven across the country,” the Army Chief said.

Lieutenant General Shaibu, however, reminded the newly inducted soldiers that all military operations must be conducted professionally and in line with established rules.

“All operations must be carried out in strict adherence to the Rules of Engagement and the Law of Armed Conflict,” he stated.

The Army Chief also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in strengthening the operational capacity of the military. He noted that Nigerians expect the new soldiers to demonstrate discipline, excellence, and loyalty to the Constitution.

He further warned the recruits against the misuse of social media, stressing that careless online activities and the unauthorized release of sensitive information could jeopardize military operations and national security.

Out of the 6,001 recruits who began the training programme, 5,876 successfully completed the course and participated in the Passing Out Parade.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved the deployment of 850 additional troops to Plateau State to address the worsening security situation following recent attacks in Jos.

The move, according to military authorities, is aimed at strengthening ongoing operations and restoring calm in affected communities across the state.

In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation ENDURING PEACE, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, the reinforcement is expected to support troops already on ground in de-escalating tensions and restoring law and order.

The statement noted that the newly deployed troops were drawn from formations in Abuja and Kaduna, with a clear mandate to protect lives and property as well as ensure the safety of residents.

While addressing the troops at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force in Jos, the COAS urged them to remain professional, disciplined, and firm in dealing with criminal elements threatening public safety.

He assured the personnel that adequate logistics and combat support have been put in place to enable them carry out their mission effectively.

The development follows a recent attack in Jos, where gunmen opened fire at a busy junction, killing several people, including students and staff of the University of Jos.

In the aftermath of the incident, tensions escalated in parts of the city, with reports of sporadic violence in surrounding areas.

Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, described the attack as unexpected, noting that both residents and security personnel were caught off guard after a prolonged period of relative peace.

According to the governor, the attackers appeared to have studied the behaviour of residents before launching the assault, disguising their operation in a manner that initially misled the public.

Authorities have since increased security presence across affected areas, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.

The military expressed confidence that the additional deployment will significantly improve ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in Plateau State.
