The Director-General, who was represented by the agency’s Director of Administration and Finance, Dr. Jekse Le’an, gave the charge while presenting a paper titled, “Old Wisdom, New Ideas,” at the grand finale of the Purple Preneur Star organised by Purple Rain Galore in Jos.

He said innovation should be built on experience, stressing that entrepreneurs must learn from those who have gone ahead of them before introducing new ideas into the marketplace.

According to him, many businesses collapse within their first two years because their owners fail to draw lessons from experienced entrepreneurs.

“We cannot talk about innovation without talking about experience. Most of what we do today is a build-up of what has been done before. When you ask questions, you get answers, and from there you can innovate.”

The PLASMIDA boss said entrepreneurs should always assess their products from the customer’s perspective, ensuring they provide solutions to real needs rather than merely offering products.

He noted that branding goes beyond logos and attractive packaging, explaining that it is defined by the experience customers have whenever they interact with a business.

“Branding is what customers remember each time they think about your business. It is built on character and integrity. When you make a promise, keep it.”

He also emphasised the importance of quality customer service, noting that repeat patronage is only possible when customers enjoy a positive experience.

Quoting a Chinese proverb, he said, “If you are not ready to smile, don’t open a shop,” stressing that customer experience is often the difference between a thriving business and one that fails.

The Director-General further advised young entrepreneurs to acquire practical skills before venturing into business, saying skill acquisition provides a solid foundation for innovation and wealth creation.

He urged participants to remain patient, resilient and open to collaboration, insisting that sustainable businesses are built through consistency rather than the pursuit of quick profits.

“Learn a skill first. Be patient and don’t quit. With patience and consistency, you can build businesses that will create jobs for others.”

The state’s cool weather and high altitude provide ideal conditions for growing quality Arabica coffee, a variety widely sought after in the global market. With renewed interest from government, private investors and coffee stakeholders, Plateau is once again attracting attention as a potential leader in Nigeria’s coffee industry.

The successful hosting of the maiden Coffee Festival International Nigeria in Jos further strengthened Plateau’s position, bringing together coffee producers, experts and investors from countries including Brazil, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania among other countries.

Stakeholders believe the festival has opened new opportunities for local farmers by connecting them with international markets, modern farming techniques and potential investors.

Chief Executive Officer of Lingzhi Global, Mrs. Blessing Nanman, said the future of coffee in Plateau lies beyond farming alone, stressing that the industry offers opportunities in processing, roasting, packaging, barista training, marketing and export.

According to her, many Nigerians have stayed away from coffee because of misconceptions, even though the sector offers opportunities for job creation, community development and skills acquisition.

“There is security in coffee, there is job creation in coffee.”

She explained that anyone could benefit from the coffee value chain, whether as a farmer, roaster, barista, marketer or distributor.

“If you cannot farm coffee, you can roast coffee. If you cannot roast coffee, you can be a coffee barista. If you cannot be a coffee barista, be a marketer.”

Nanman disclosed that Lingzhi Global has served over 20 million cups of coffee in less than one year, expanded its workforce from about 50 to more than 100 employees and built a distribution network with thousands of distributors across the country.

She said the company’s efforts have also created a reliable market for farmers, adding that many coffee growers who previously struggled to sell their harvests now have buyers following them to their communities to purchase coffee.

According to her, Plateau has the potential to become Nigeria’s coffee capital if government, investors, farmers and consumers continue to work together to strengthen the coffee value chain and increase local consumption.

Nanman said the company’s awareness campaign has helped change public perception about coffee, leading to increased interest among young people and farmers.

She recalled that one farmer, who only started drinking coffee after attending one of Lingzhi Global’s programmes, has now gone into commercial nursery production.

“Last year, somebody just took a cup of coffee, and this year he is farming coffee. We bought 10,000 of his nursery and he was empowered with over ₦7 million,” she said.

According to her, coffee is no longer just a beverage but a business capable of creating sustainable jobs and improving livelihoods across the country.

She noted that farmers who previously complained of having no buyers are now enjoying a ready market, as traders and processors visit communities to buy coffee directly from producers.

“This year, the farmers did not cry. They can testify that buyers are following us to our villages to collect coffee,” she added.

Nanman said Lingzhi Global will continue to promote coffee awareness across Nigeria, noting that after the successful maiden Coffee Festival International in Plateau State, the next edition will hold in Cross River State as part of efforts to grow the industry nationwide.

She urged governments, private investors and development partners to support coffee production, saying the sector has the potential to create thousands of jobs, improve rural incomes and position Nigeria as a major player in the global coffee industry.

Delivering the goodwill message, Mrs. Bot, Director of Cooperatives, encouraged members to actively participate, support officials, and increase their savings each year, stressing that unity and commitment to the cooperative bring long-term benefits for members and their families.

On behalf of all electoral officers in the state, Mr. Masekaven Kwaghan praised the cooperative’s leadership for their integrity and dedication and encouraged members to increase their savings, emphasizing that higher contributions lead to greater dividends and overall growth for the society.

The Head of Department of Electoral Operation, Mr. Isa Idakwo encouraged members to be responsible and purposeful in the cooperative, highlighting that it offers empowerment, capacity building, and financial stability. Samuel Nanchang Jatau, represented by PSIRS Chairman Dr. Jim Pam Wayas, said the 2025 Tax Reform Act affects every citizen and will take effect on January 1. He explained that the bill is not a punishment but a new fiscal rule the state is prepared to embrace.

He added that the law unifies tax administration across all levels of government and grants more autonomy to revenue services. Dr. Wayas urged stakeholders to seek clarification and clear misconceptions as the state prepares for full implementation.

The Executive Chairman of PSIRS, Dr. Jim Pam Wayas, gave an overview of the 2025 Nigeria Tax Reform Act, explaining that it consolidates several existing laws into a single framework. He highlighted the unification of tax processes across federal, state, and local governments and the autonomy granted to revenue services.

Dr. Wayas outlined key changes for individuals and businesses, including updates to personal income tax, VAT, capital gains tax, and minimum tax. He noted that small businesses now enjoy a higher zero-rate threshold, while capital gains tax is calculated based on effective tax rates ranging from 10% to 25%.

He also emphasized that financial institutions must report collective income directly to revenue services, simplifying compliance. Dr. Wayas encouraged stakeholders to actively ask questions and discuss critical issues to ensure proper understanding and smooth implementation of the law.

During the stakeholders’ engagement, Mr. Jonathan Mangai, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at PSIRS, said stakeholders in Plateau State expect a fair, transparent, and accountable tax system. They want tax officials to act with integrity, communicate clearly, use efficient digital processes, and show a clear link between taxes paid and public services.

He emphasized that the way forward includes digitalizing tax administration, simplifying tax laws, and improving taxpayer services. Strengthening governance, ensuring data security, and fostering collaboration among government, tax authorities, taxpayers, professionals, and the media are essential to building trust and encouraging voluntary compliance.

The event also featured a panel session, with Dr. Jim Pam Wayas, Mrs. Rahila Olu-Silas Esq, Assoc. Prof. Dagwom Dang, and Mr. Monday Bereh, moderated by Mr. Wulashik Dafaan and MC Tsok, focused on the New Nigeria Tax Law. They highlighted the law’s goal to improve compliance, expand tax coverage, and ensure both financial and non-financial sectors contribute fairly. A people-centric approach linking tax collection to public service and development was emphasized.

Panelists also discussed practical steps for implementation, including addressing compliance challenges and ensuring transparency. They stressed the importance of preparing taxpayers for deductions under the new law and fostering collaboration among tax authorities, professionals, and stakeholders to build trust and efficiency in Plateau State’s tax system.

In her closing remark, Mrs. Deborah Adamu Kesuwo, Chairperson of the stakeholders’ engagement team, thanked participants for their contributions to the 2025 General Tax Models discussion, praised the resource persons for their insights, and commended the team and Executive Chairman Dr. Jim Wayas for their dedication to building a transparent and efficient tax system in Plateau State.
