At least 13 people lost their lives after a mining site collapsed in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State. The incident occurred on Saturday, with the Chairman of Bassa LGA, Dr. Joshua Riti, confirming the tragedy on Monday.
Riti expressed sorrow over the high death toll, explaining that seven of the victims were from Bassa LGA. He lamented the loss of young people who were simply trying to make a living amid the country’s economic challenges.
“These young people were out searching for a means of survival but tragically lost their lives,” Riti said, extending his condolences to the grieving families.
Most of the victims were youths aged between 18 and 30. The mining site was located at the border between Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.
